What are the Functions of the Hinge Cup, Arm, and Base Plate?

Role: Used to fix the door leaf, usually embedded or fixed in the side of the door panel. As a hinge and the door of the direct connection point, bear the weight of the door and the movement of the torsion.
Characteristics: Mostly cup-shaped structure, commonly found in modern hidden Hinges (e.g. European hinges).·
The depth can be adjusted by means of screws to realize the fine adjustment of the door leaf (front and rear position).
- Hinge Arm (connecting arm)
Function:
The core part connecting the hinge cup and the base, transmitting the movement force and load bearing of the door. Cushioning is provided by internal springs or hydraulics (high grade hinges) for silent opening and closing.
Features:
Is usually designed as a retractable or segmented structure, allowing the door to be opened and closed at multiple angles (e.g. 90°, 110° or even 180°). Some of the hinge arms are equipped with adjusting screws to correct the left/right position and height of the door leaf.
- Base (mounting plate)
Function: Fixed to the door frame or side panels as a support base for the hinges. It works with the hinge arm to ensure precise alignment of the door leaf with the door frame.
Characteristics: Usually with long holes or adjusting screws for easy adjustment of position during installation. Material needs to be strong (e.g. steel) to distribute the weight and impact of the door leaf.

Synergy Principle
Load-bearing: The hinge cup and base form a stable triangular structure through the hinge arm, which distributes the weight of the door leaf.
Flexibility: The mechanical design of the hinge arms allows for smooth door rotation, and some hinges support three-dimensional adjustment (up and down, left and right, front and back).
Durability: The material of the main parts (e.g. stainless steel, cold rolled steel) and bearings (e.g. hydraulic cushioning) determine the life of the hinge.
Additional components (supplemental)
Adjustment Screws: used to fine-tune the position of the door leaf.
Dampers: High-end hinges are equipped to achieve slow closing.
Bearings or cores: reduce friction and ensure smooth rotation. The design of the main components may vary slightly between hinge types (e.g. flush hinges, spring hinges, heavy duty hinges), but the core function is the same. Proper installation and adjustment of the three main parts is critical to ensure hinge performance.
